I work with individuals over the age of eighteen and couples for short-term counselling or longer-term psychotherapy.

I had my first troll, does that mean I’ve insta I had my first troll, does that mean I’ve insta made it?
They suggested I google narcissism as my clinical experience and years of training wasn’t enough.
Out of curiosity, some free time and wondering if I had missed something, I did, and it confirmed what I already knew (through academic texts and journals, google isn’t even a reliable source as a reference) but they planted that tiny seed of doubt.
Even when you know your stuff, do you see how easy it is for somebody to make you doubt yourself, even for a split second!
Their next comment swiftly moved to them feeling sorry for my parents 🤷🏽‍♀️ I knew I must have touched a nerve or maybe they were having a bad day, who knows.
Was it a coincidence that I’ve been posting about narcissists belittling others, using ridicule, abusive language, fits of rage when challenged and having a fragile sense of self?
There might be a misconception that therapists have to take shit, but we are human first and as a person, I don’t take shit.
Luckily for me I know a thing or two about boundaries and blocked them pretty quick.
In future, I will be blocking without even responding. Narcissists/trolls hate that shit.

When you do not feel that same 'spark' or there seems to be some passion lacking, it's easy to assume that there is something wrong with your present relationship. If there is a part of you still pining for your ex, this might mean that in your current relationship you are creating distance or not allowing yourself to be fully present.⁠

Friends with benefits: It might seem like a great idea at the time and the perfect way to start to get over your broken heart. All the sex with none of the emotion, good luck separating that! You might think it will be easy for you creating and keeping that emotional distance by not getting too emotionally attached. Unfortunately, this is not how feelings or emotions work, you could end up developing even stronger feelings and prolonging your heartbreak. ⁠

Idealising the relationship: It can be tempting to idealise the relationship and remember all of the good times, but the relationship has ended for a reason. Either you, or your ex were unhappy with a large enough part of the relationship to no longer be together. Ask yourself whether you might be intentionally or unintentionally forgetting about all of their annoying habits or traits.⁠

Wishful Thinking: If you are living with hope that they will come to their senses and realise what they’ve lost, this is keeping you in a perpetual state of being stuck. This could mean waiting for something that might never happen. In the meantime, life goes on and before you know it they’ve found a way to move on leaving you hurt and nursing your broken heart. ⁠

Breathing exercises are the quickest and easiest way to relieve anxiety and stress, it can be done pretty much anywhere, at anytime without being too obvious, even when you are in a social environment. Physiologically it slows down your heart rate and calms you down. Think: slow and steady deep breaths.⁠

Caffeine and alcohol make anxiety symptoms worse. There are physical and mental health benefits to including regular exercise into your lifestyle. Exercise releases endorphins, a natural feel good hormone which helps to relieve stress, improve concentration and sleep.⁠

3. Grounding Exercise ⁠
⁠
A grounding exercise is used to regulate the body and bring you into the here and now, and away from irrational thoughts or extreme thinking. This can be as simple as drinking a cold glass of water, which regulates the nervous system. Alternatively, try the 54321 technique it is often used in cases of anxiety or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Name out loud: 5 things you can see, 4 things you can feel, 3 things you can hear, 2 things you can smell, 1 thing you can taste.⁠

4. Don't Believe Everything You Think⁠

It’s okay to challenge your negative beliefs, look for actual evidence for the negative thought in the moment. Is it an accurate reflection of what is happening or are you overthinking or catastrophising something that may never happen?⁠

5. Self Compassion⁠

When you have a bad day it might be a natural response to feel bad about it and think of yourself as less than worthy or a failure. Think how you would treat a friend and the kind words you might offer in order to make them feel better. Use this same caring and compassion for yourself and it can really help relieve your anxiety.⁠

Therefore, feeling emotionally close to anyone can feel very overwhelming and it can trigger your fight/flight response to get as far away from confrontation or connection. ⁠

The avoidance behaviour can then take on many forms. It can be difficult to have challenging conversations, you might belittle or minimise the emotional needs of others, have a preference for isolation and you can have a fear of intimate relationships as the need for your independence hinders the ability to form close relational bonds.⁠
