How do we know we need couples counselling?
Distancing in the relationship can cause additional strain when couples feel that their needs are not being met.
This can cause tension, hostility and add to conflict when both or one partner feels unsatisfied or unfulfilled within the relationship.
If you are beginning to feel alone in your relationship or you feel like you are both stuck, having the exact same argument, unable to agree or see things from your partner's perspective, now would be a good time to seek additional professional support to help your relationship and reestablish your loving loving connection.
Relationship therapy allows a safe space to really talk about those issues that perhaps you've been avoiding, particularly when you need to have some difficult conversations about family, finances, or the fact that you no longer feel as in love as you used to.
This is a great opportunity to learn how to have these difficult conversations with each other, so that you can feel heard and valued in your relationship.
Most importantly, you can identify what it is exactly that needs to change in your relationship, in order for you both to once again feel happy.

How can you help my relationship?
When you are in a relationship it can be difficult when you are in an emotive state due to stress to think rationally, clearly and resolve conflict in a way that is helpful.
Having an impartial professional can be the extra assistance you need, who will treat your relationship as the client, without judgement, blaming or taking sides.
As a counsellor and psychotherapist I have undertaken specific training in working with couples to facilitate stronger and emotionally connected relationships.
This can be achieved in a number of ways:
- Understanding the relational patterns specific to your relationship, how you encounter conflict and deal with differences.
- Practical tool based skills to communicate effectively to resolve conflict, learn to compromise and become emotionally connected.
- Help you to understand your needs in the relationship and how you can get more of those needs met from your partner.
How long will it take?
Many couples are able to make effective changes within 6-10 weekly sessions and find this enough to continue on their own with the new skills learned during the course of therapy.
Every relationship is individual and unique, as a broad average couples counselling can change your relationship within three months or up to a year depending on the condition of your relationship.
This can be mutually discussed in your first sessions, where we will work collaboratively to an agreed timescale.
Sessions are most effective when they take place on a weekly basis, this allows time to learn skills and complete some small relationship building tasks in between the sessions where appropriate.
Each couple is an individual and your therapy will be treated as such. I offer a bespoke service that works towards the needs of your relationship and what it is you both would like to achieve from couples counselling.

What are the benefits of marriage counselling?

How much does it cost?
Couples counselling is £85 per hour. Some couples find it useful to have the option of additional time up to 90 minutes subject to availability. I would recommend a minimum of 6 sessions to experience the maximum benefit.
I'm an integrative relational psychotherapeutic counsellor, which means I am trained in a number of approaches to find what works best for you.
Couples therapy is a solution focused approach that can include some skills building in between sessions to consolidate what you learn about your relationship and to make the most out of your therapy.
